Memphis Public Library Hosts Memphis in May

Art Exhibit

(Memphis, TN) - “Art of the Philippines” will be on display in the Goodwyn Gallery in the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, 3030 Poplar Avenue, through May 29 in conjunction with Memphis in May “Salute to the Philippines” International Week.

The exhibit showcases select paintings from the collection of the Philippine Center in New York. From oil on canvas to metal on wood, “Art of the Philippines” displays works of notable artists, time-periods, styles, and trends of the Philippines and its rich history.

Spring Book Sale

Spring Book Sale 2012

(Memphis, TN) - The Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, 3030 Poplar Avenue, will host the Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12 at 10 am. The pre-sale for Friends of the Library is from 8 am to 10 am Friday, May 8. All proceeds from the book sale will help expand library collections and improve Memphis Public Library & Information Center services to the community.

Teen Technology Camp Information

It’s time to register for Teen Technology Camp 2012 at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library. The application deadline is May 10. You can sign up at any Memphis Public Library & Information Center or follow the link Teen Technology Application to the Memphis Public Library & Information Center webpage to register.
 
Teen Technology Camp begins July 16 and is a week long technology-based Summer Camp for teens aged 13 to 15. The technology camp is sponsored by the Memphis Chapter of the Society for Information Management and the City of Memphis Public Library.

Summer Reading Club 2012

(Memphis, TN) – “Dream Big” is the theme for the Memphis Public Library & Information Center Summer Reading Club 2012. The summer program includes activities, completing summer reading goals, and story times related to achieving dreams. Summer Reading Club is free and is open to children, teens, and adults.
 
First Tennessee Foundation is the sponsor for Summer Reading Club 2012 and will provide books, games, and prizes for participants upon completion of their summer reading goal of reading ten books during the eight week summer program.
 
“We want to express our sincere appreciation to the First Tennessee Foundation for serving as our lead sponsor for the Summer Reading Club. Literacy is among our highest priorities, and this program has demonstrated success in bridging the gap while students are out of school for the summer,” said Director of Libraries Keenon McCloy.

Volunteer Appreciation Program
 
The Volunteer Appreciation Program was held Sunday, April 1, 2012 at Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library. Mrs. Ruby Wharton served as the guest speaker. Wharton congratulated Memphis Public Library & Information Center volunteers and thanked them for making a difference in the community, customer’s lives, and each Memphis Public Library & Information Center branch they serve, with a special message “I volunteer, I am making a difference.” Wharton also added, “Compassion gets you in the door; passion will keep you there” urging new people to volunteer and encouraging current volunteers.
 

The Memphis Public Library & Information currently has over 460 volunteers spread across 18 branches with over 31,000 volunteer hours served. That amounts to about $700,000 dollars worth of service.
